The WIEB HLRW Committee submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Washington State Department of Ecology, and the Environmental Protection Agency on the Hanford Holistic Agreement, the result of two years of federally mediated negotiations between the three entities that lays out many new milestones associated with the continued clean-up of the Hanford site in southeastern Washington State. The comments focus on clean-up of radioactive tank waste, which will have to be moved through some Western states for treatment and/or disposal under the new agreement. The HLRW Committee’s comments direct DOE to fully consider the transportation implications of these decisions, and to engage with any Western states that would lie along the waste transportation routes, before they make any of these decisions.
