Demand Charges & EV Fast-Charging: An Intermountain West Assessment

The Western Interstate Energy Board (WIEB) held a webinar on December 3, 2021 on a new report titled, Demand Charges & Electric Vehicle Fast-Charging: An Intermountain West Assessment. This report was a collaboration among the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO), Utah Clean Cities, and WIEB.

The report examines demand charges and rate structures from a sample of 41 electric service providers (ESPs) throughout the Intermountain West. A range of electric vehicle (EV) fast charging scenarios were applied to each ESP’s rate structure, to provide illustrative examples of how these electric demand charges impact electric bills for DC Fast Charging (DCFC) station hosts, and by association, prices paid by consumers for fast charging. The goal of the report was to provide state policy makers and regulators a snapshot on current electric rates paid by DCFC station hosts. Demand charges are an important topic related to the potential development of EV charging infrastructure.
