Building Codes:
The National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) is a model code that only comes into force when Canadian provinces and territories elect to enact and enforce laws and regulations to that code. They may choose to adopt the code as is or make minor changes to adapt to regional needs. Alberta is one of four provinces that has adopted the 2017 NECB and, in 2024, adopted 2020 NECB for new constructions and the National Building Code (Alberta Edition) 2023 (NBC(AE) 2023). Appliance Standards:
Canada’s federal government established energy efficiency appliance standards including the following categories: household appliances, commercial refrigeration equipment, heating and cooling systems, lighting products, and water heaters. Alberta does not have additional provincial appliance standards.
