The WIEB HLRW Committee submitted a response to the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) in response to their Request for Information on a spent nuclear fuel transportation Package Performance Demonstration. The HLRW Committee answered seven of DOE-NE’s questions in their response. Their main comment echoes their 2018 position paper, “Full-Scale Cask Testing,” which urges DOE to focus on validating the transportation package designs by conducting regulatory testing first, before performing any demonstration testing aimed at building public trust and confidence in a spent nuclear fuel transportation program.
