Energy Storage:
In 2017, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) required utilities to include energy storage in their IRP processes. The PRC also revised Rule 17.9.568 to incorporate national best practices for the review of renewable and energy storage projects. In 2023, New Mexico established a statewide energy storage deployment target and set goals for 1,000 MW of new energy storage by 2028 and an additional 1,000 MW by 2033 (SB 456). The state established a $20 million fund to provide grants for solar energy and battery storage projects in tribal, rural, and low-income communities in 2025 (HB 128).
