Since 2020, Alberta operates the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) system, applying carbon pricing and emissions regulation broadly across the industrial sector. This includes a carbon price starting at $65 per ton in 2023, rising $15 annually to reach $170 per ton by 2030. Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan, released in 2023, establishes a goal for the province to achieve a carbon‑neutral economy by 2050.
