Net Metering:

BC Hydro’s Net Metering Service (Rate Schedule 1289), first approved in 2004, allowed residential and commercial customers with on-site clean generation up to 100 kW to offset consumption and sell surplus electricity to BC Hydro. In March 2026, the BCUC approved BC Hydro’s application to replace the Net Metering Service Rate with a Self-Generation Service Rate compensating customers at 10 cents per kWh for surplus electricity, effective July 1, 2026 for new customers, with existing customers transitioning over 10 years. The BCUC also approved a new Community Generation Service Rate allowing up to 2 MW of surplus electricity from community facilities at 10 cents per kWh. FortisBC operates a separate net metering tariff under BCUC approval.
